Andrew Chang Weng Shan ― Corporate & Commercial Dispute Resolution, Banking & Insolvency and Shipping
Andrew commenced practice with the firm’s Corporate & Commercial, Banking & Insolvency and Shipping dispute practice groups in 2018. He now works with a well-known partner, Andrew Chiew, on a wide range of disputes in these areas of practice. He also independently handles numerous shipping disputes and advises on non-contentious insolvency and shipping matters.
Andrew acts for private individuals and corporations in various industries, including plantation, oil & gas, banking, investment holding, property development, construction, healthcare, telecommunications and shipping. Andrew has appeared at all levels of the Malaysian courts, including its apex court. He is also active in commercial arbitration.
Andrew is one of the contributing editors to the Malaysian Civil Procedure 2021 and the upcoming Thompson Reuters publication, Restructuring and Insolvency: A Commentary. He is also the co-author of various articles published by the firm’s Corporate & Commercial and Banking & Insolvency practice groups.
Andrew read law at King’s College London and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2017 before being admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2018.
Arissa Ahrom ― Employment & Industrial Relations
Arissa works alongside Shariffullah Majeed, one of the principal partners of the practice and manages numerous industrial relations disputes both in the Industrial Court and the higher courts involving unfair dismissal claims by employees arising from among others, restructuring exercises, misconduct, poor performance and constructive dismissal / forced resignation allegations. She also frequently advises clients on disciplinary processes against employees, sexual harassment complaints at the workplace, performance issues, mutual separation schemes and the localisation of employment contracts of foreign companies establishing a Malaysian presence.
Arissa is a contributing editor to the Annotated Statutes of Malaysia – Industrial Relations Act 1967 (2021 update) and the Annotated Statutes of Malaysia – Trade Unions Act 1959 (2021 update), as well as a co-author of the LexisAdvance Practical Guidance Malaysian Employment Module. She speaks regularly on employment issues, particularly the management of sexual harassment complaints at the workplace.
Arissa read law at the Queen’s University of Belfast and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2017 prior to being admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2018.
Chung Wai works principally with a long-standing partner, SM Shanmugam, in the Corporate & Commercial dispute practice group. His primary areas of expertise include shareholders’ disputes, breach of directors’ duties, civil fraud, tortious disputes as well as securities litigation. He regularly advises and acts for shareholders in oppression actions, derivative actions, just and equitable winding up of companies and disputes arising from shareholders’ agreements.
Apart from his active court practice, Chung Wai has been involved in a number of domestic and international commercial arbitrations. He also advises and acts for private clients in relation to estate planning and succession, estate administration and private wealth disputes.
Chung Wai is one of the contributors to the Malaysian Civil Procedure (White Book) (2021 edition) and the Annotated Statutes of Malaysia: Companies Commission of Malaysia Act 2001 [Act 614] (LexisNexis, Issue 189). He also co-authored various articles published by the firm’s Corporate and Commercial disputes practice group, which have since been picked up by CLJ Law.
Chung Wai obtained his LLB (Hons) from the University of London and holds the Malaysian Certificate in Legal Practice. He was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in October 2018.
Lee Wan Xin ― Corporate and M&A
Wan Xin commenced her practice in 2018 in the firm’s Corporate and Mergers & Acquisitions practice group. Her earlier practice mainly revolved around the area of banking and financial services before her subsequent transition to focus on capital markets and mergers & acquisition. She works principally with partners, Tay Weng Hwee, who heads the practice, and Bella Chu, in handling capital markets transactions and advising matters pertaining to corporate and commercial laws.
Wan Xin’s primary areas of expertise in equity capital markets encompass initial public offerings, related party transactions and continuing listing requirements. She has substantial experience in drafting both transaction and disclosure documents, as well as executing and advising on legal due diligence. She works closely with investment banks and trustees in advising both listed entities and private limited companies. In debt capital markets, she has advised clients on issuance of the medium-term notes, commercial papers and sukuk under both conventional and syariah principles.
Wan Xin also has experience in advising domestic and international clients on mergers and acquisitions in a diverse range of industries including oil and gas, manufacturing, plantation and education. She regularly advises multinational and local companies on general corporate and commercial laws.
A recipient of the JPA scholarship, Wan Xin graduated with LLB (Hons) from the University of Bristol and was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2018.
Wong Han Wey ― Banking & Insolvency
Han Wey’s practice focuses mainly on banking and insolvency disputes where he works closely alongside its practice head, Kumar Kanagasingam. He has appeared in all levels of the Malaysian courts and regularly acts for financial institutions on complex high-value debt recovery and lender liability disputes, encompassing issues on Islamic finance, enforcement of securities, guarantees and indemnities across a plethora of industries.
Aside from banking disputes, Han Wey acts for insolvency practitioners on liquidation and receivership briefs and also handles contractual and commercial disputes representing private and public corporations on matters involving, amongst others, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duties and fraud.
He is a contributor to the Malaysian Civil Procedure (White Book) (Thomson Reuters, 2021 edition) and has co-authored various articles published by the firm’s Banking and Insolvency practice group.
Han Wey holds a LLB (Hons) from the University of Leeds and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2017 before being admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2018.
