Doing Business Sustainably

“At Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill, we have a long-standing commitment to conduct our business responsibly and making a positive impact beyond the courtroom. We strive for best practice by fostering an inclusive workplace, taking our corporate social responsibility seriously, and creating a culture of sustainability. Our ESG practice seeks to advise clients on a range of environmental, social, and governance matters, and we are conscious of the need to follow our own advice in our operations. From pro bono work and efficient energy use to charitable giving, we aim to shape a better future.”
  1. Charitable Giving
We are determined to make a positive impact in our communities by volunteering and providing aid to the underprivileged, irrespective of race, religion, or political orientation. We know that community engagement is important to our people, and their ongoing donation of time and resources is a testament to this commitment. We have recently organised the following activities:
    • Soup Kitchen collaboration with The Assembly Soup Kitchen on 7 September 2024.

    • Visit to Pertubuhan Rumah Nur Sakinah on 26 April 2024 in conjunction with Hari Raya celebrations.

    • Visit to Pusat Jagaan Sri Mesra on 8 March 2024 in conjunction with International Women’s Day.

    • Visit to Bodhi Homecare on 23 September 2023.

  2. Access to Justice
We believe that equality in the ability to access justice is fundamental to upholding the rule of law. Hence, we are committed to providing legal advice and representation to deprived communities who cannot afford counsel. We support pro bono work enthusiastically and treat it equivalently to billable client work in performance reviews.
    • We have hosted Orang Asli Peoples Awareness Day on 15 November 2023, Themed ‘SDG-ESG And The Orang Asli: Impact, Implications & Inclusivity’, this event delved into the dynamics of Sustainable Development Goals and ESG principles intersecting with the challenges and aspirations of the Orang Asli community, featuring external speakers and informational booths.

    • We previously published “Pro Bono Stories,” a compelling collection of cases we have undertaken on a pro bono basis. This publication illustrates our dedication to providing legal support and advocating for those who might otherwise lack access to justice. Discover the impactful stories and our ongoing commitment to pro bono work in the full publication.

  3. Community Engagement
We believe in achieving positive community impacts through collaboration with clients, charities, non-profit organisations, and community representatives. We have partnered with the following organisations on several occasions:
    • Visit to SK Kiaramas on 12 September 2024 to speak on Children’s Rights in conjunction with Malaysia Day.

    • The Asli Co., a Malaysian social enterprise that supports indigenous mothers by enabling them to earn a living through crafting modern handicrafts and home-based products.
    • PichaEats, a Malaysian social enterprise, empowering chefs from displaced communities to rebuild their lives and regain independence.

  4. Environmental Initiatives
We recognise the challenges posed by climate change and the importance of reducing our environmental footprint. Our CSR committee actively reaches out to the rest of the firm to raise awareness, suggest ways of making a difference, and organise environmental projects within the firm and in our local communities. Some of the initiatives that we are undertaking include:
    • Reducing energy consumption
    • Reducing waste and implementing recycling programmes for paper, plastic, and glass.
    • Optimising our employees’ daily commute by providing shared mobility.
    • Replacing business travel with virtual meetings and compensating for emissions.

  5. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
As a responsible business, we embrace and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within our organisation to foster a culture where every colleague can thrive, regardless of background, gender, age, or circumstance. We value diverse perspectives and invest in developing talent to ensure we can provide a premier service to our clients.
Currently, the staff in our firm is comprised of 39.55% men and 60.45% women, highlighting our commitment to gender diversity. Additionally, our hires span a wide age range, from the youngest at 20 years old to the oldest at 90 years old, reflecting our dedication to an inclusive workforce across all age groups.
